Margaret Grant and the Grant family of Arisaig, 1880s
« on: Friday 10 January 25 17:30 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for a death record for Margaret Grant, born 30 October 1872 in Mears Ashby, Northamptonshire to Alexander Grant and Elizabeth Croal (they were Highlanders and only spent a short part of their lives in England).

Margaret was from a family of 10 who lived in Arisaig between 1880 and 1905; I have identified them on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses - and beyond.

I am having trouble with Margaret, however: she only appears on the 1881 census, and I cannot find a record of her death between 1881 and 1891.

I can find a death record for her sibling Charles in 1883, and I have found their family tombstone in Arisaig from the 1940s: this has a couple of family members and their wives, but doesn't mention Margaret. The remaining family members are buried in St Mary's Church, Langley, Berkshire.

Where should I look next for clues?

By 1891 she could have married - have you already ruled that out?

It is an option - any tips for narrowing the search for potential marriage records?

The difficulty is matching a Margaret Grant with this one.

If she married in Scotland you can download the marriage cert from Scotlands People & check parental details.

I can't see a marriage in Argyll & I would think it's more likely she would marry where her parents lived given she would only be around 18 or so.

Have you checked if she is in England in 1891?

Yes, unfortunately I can't find any Margaret Grants born in Northamptonshire in 1872 in England in 1891. I can't find any born in Scotland, either; in any case, the other Grants are accurate when giving their census returns.

The most likely occupation for Margaret in 1891 would be domestic servant because that's what her mother and sisters were.
