OLD CHARACTER DEAD. - On the same day, the 22nd of December, Mr Thomas Pierce, formerly Tyn Lon, died aged 69. He was one of the most straightforward and honest characters in the area, and a hard worker in his day. He worked for a long time at Quarry y Rhosydd. He was of a gentle and kind nature, and always very willing to help. He was the son of William and Dorothy Pierce, Pant y. Rhos, Llanystumdwy, and there he was born. He spent the first part of his life with the farmers of Lleyn and Eifionydd, and it is told about him many times, but innocently. Left gen. we missed him, but he had a good night's sleep without his night being long. Although he was infirm for some time, he was only bedridden for one day. He stayed during his last days with Mrs Gwen Hughes, Bryncir Ter-race. He was buried in Penmorfa Cemetery, where his wife has been buried for about ten years. Reverend J. W. Edwards officiated at his funeral. D. Collwyn Morgan, M.A., the Rector, and J. James, the Curate. Peace

I should have scrolled down! I only saw the first item under Penmorfa, which is a shorter item also about him, and notes that he was out as normal on the Friday (the day before his death). Also his funeral was the following Thursday, attended by a large crowd, and he was buried with his wife

Dorothy, Laura and two more daughters appear to be on 1861 as Griffiths

To add to the confusion I think there's still some use of patronymics going on in earlier years. There's a marriage in 1838 of Dorothy  Griffiths to William Thomas

1841 - Pantyrhos

William Thomas 25
Dorothy Thomas    25
Owen Thomas   2

Many many thanks for the information you have been sending I really appreciate it. I have been working through it along with my own info to try and sort this out.  I now know Thomas' parents but am trying to work out the surname of Dorothy.  Thank you again.

I think Dorothy Griffith(s) is more likely - given the 1851 census and her mother's name

The 1853 marriage is not in the right registration district for LLanystumdwy

Her husband William is more of a challenge surname-wise!

Yes I found the 1851 one later, and yes the Griffiths / Pierce will need looking at carefully.
