Vanished without trace.
« on: Tuesday 04 February 25 17:26 GMT (UK) »
An ancestor appears in the 1881 census aged 30 (earlier records all found) ,and thereafter I cannot find any record of him whatsoever.
I did wonder if anyone has come across a similar problem,I can understand the problem with early records but this is comparitively "recent".
(Have in mind my recent post "Henry James Wood" ).

Oh thank you Carole -- I had assumed (and we should never assume should we!!) - that it was another vanished person.

Possibilities:

1. Outgoing passenger records are only from 1890 onwards.

2. There will be little, or no, records of travel to Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland, etc. Same goes for Europe.

3. Maybe he joined the Armed Forces. (Boer War?)

4. Perhaps he simply changed his name? (Deed Poll not necessary)

Many thanks for your replies.
My feeling is he would have emigrated with his brother, but will never know.
