DUGGAN/DOOGAN - Ireland 1850's
« on: Sunday 02 March 25 19:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to find some information from Irish records for my GG Grandfather Henry Duggan/Doogan, potential birth year 1851.  Also known as Harry.

The 1881 Census shows him living in Leith, Edinburgh with wife Elizabeth (Quinn), and children Daniel (8) and Elizabeth (2 months).   His daughter Elizabeth died in 1905 in Leith and his wife Elizabeth died in 1906.

I can't find any birth or death details or details of any siblings he had.

Any help in Irish or Scottish records would be appreciated.

Thank you

Daniel is christened  at Rathfriland in Co Down on 14/11/1872

There is a marriage in 1866.  I think Henry may have been born before 1851 if this is the correct marriage. Where does the year of 1851 come from please?

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGD7-FT3?lang=en

There is this note of a marriage as well

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6V7S-RZPD?lang=en

From this marriage certificate we can note that the father's name is Daniel Duggan.  (NB this aligns also with Irish naming patterns)

Traditional Naming Pattern
A traditional naming pattern was often used by Irish parents until the later 19th century:

First son usually named for the father's father
Second son usually named for the mother's father
Third son usually named for the father
Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother
Fifth son usually named for the mother's eldest brother
First daughter usually named for the mother's mother
Second daughter usually named for the father's mother
Third daughter usually named for the mother
Fourth daughter usually named for the mother's eldest sister
Fifth daughter usually named for the father's eldest sister.

We need to get this information  from you so we don't waste time chasing families that may not be correct.

ETA Can you let us know the age of Daniel in the census - this has been translated as a smiley face in your post
Actually the ages of the children and parents from this census would be useful

Daniel Dugan death in Leitrim in 1891.

Duggan family from Leitrim in the 1901 census:

And 1911:

Daniel Duggan married Mary Ann Devlin in 1891. His father was Daniel, so that appears to make him a brother to your Henry.

Looks as though there were still Duggans farming in Leitrim in the 1960s. This probate abstract from the PRONI wills site:

Duggan, Daniel of Leitrim Hilltown county Down farmer died 14 October 1964 Probate Belfast 10 December to Catherine Duggan the widow and Peter Heenan grocer. Effects £2450.
