1886 William Russell Hood (are there two) & Helen Sisterson
« on: Saturday 05 April 25 17:35 BST (UK) »
28th December 1886, St Mary, South Shields, County of Durham, after Banns.

William Russell Hood, 27, Bachelor &
Helen Sisterson, 23, Spinster
Present as wits: Robson Sisterson ; Elizabeth Henderson.

1) I was expecting to see the Father as James Hood, [born Selby, Yorkshire] so is there another William Russell Hood, about, please?

2) "Wm Russell Hood", may have done a bunk by the 1891 England & Wales Census and may be one (with 2 pieces of baggage) intending to get P. S. [Permanent Settlement] in Philadelphia, according to the July 1888 Steamship "Roman" records from Liverpool to the Port of Boston (District of Boston & Charlestown), on Familysearch.

Is there any Court application references anywhere, please?

Have you looked for births for William Russell Hood or found him on censuses before marriage?

Thank you for your replies, I had looked into the one born Selby, Yorkshire, as they are part of my wider family.

Here is the 1860 Birth, Registered 1861, Registration District Selby, to which S S refers:- Attached

In 1881 the one born Selby was at:-

1881 Census, St Giles, Durham.
27 Young Street.
James Hood, Head, Marr, 52, Tallow Chandler, born Selby, Yorks.
Sarah Hood, Wife, Marr, 50, born Selby, Yorks.
John W. Hood, 23, Colliery Brakesman, Selby, Yorkshire
William R. Hood, Son, Unm, 21, Tallow Chandler, born Selby, Yorkshire.
George A. Hood, Son, Unm, 18, Printer, born Selby, Yorks.
Bernard P. Hood, Son, Unm, 10, Scholar, born Scarbro', Yorkshire.
 ----------

But it is the 1886 Marriage at South Shields, and the Father's name?

The William Russell Hood, born Selby, Yorkshire, would know who his Father was.

Ruth Hood, born 4th October 1887, at Penshaw, in the Reg'n District:- Houghton, was missing on the GRO Online Index but has just become available (below).

If no second William Russell Hood can be found with a Father called William Russell Hood.

Perhaps, the Church Marriage Register might be different, from my GRO Marriage Copy, regarding the Father of the Groom?

Maybe it was just a mistake writing the grooms name down twice instead of the correct fathers name

Thanks, Yes, I wondered if the Father was an error, or even a GRO copying error.

1935 Death at 80 Gawber Road, Barnsley, William Russell HOOD, 75 years (giving a Birth about 1860, which would tie in with born Selby).

Seemed he lived at Hawes or Hames or Haines, Lodging House, Doncaster Road, Barnsley, a Painter, Journeyman.

Informant:- D. Crawforth, Occupier, 80 Gawber Road.

I was hoping it might say Widower of ...

But thwarted at every turn, to get an easy resolution  ;)

Mark

Added:
In the 1921 Census
Workhouse 80 Gawber Road Barnsley.

He must have become unwell at his Lodging in Doncaster Road, Barnsley and admitted to the Workhouse.

Something gave me the feeling (H)Ellen Hood might have remarried, too?

She married Charlton Robson in 1904.
Free search on Durham Records Online suggests father given as John Sisterson. They have her age as 48 (did she bump it up because Mr Robson was older?) Residence for both Bee Hive Inn.

Did Charlton marry again in 1907, to Jane Archbold?
1911
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWH4-V2G

Possible death
March 1907 Easington 10a 300
Robson, Ellen
age 45

Might be a burial for her on DRO.

Thank you Jon,

Very good!

You probably also noticed in my opening post, Ellen Hood, 38, Wid., was Servant to Charlton Robson (3 generations of Charlton Robson, in same Household) in the 1901 Census, at Washington, Co Durham, England.

1904 Easington District
Shotton with Haswell, County Durham
It seems DRO are saying their residences [at time of marriage] were the Bee Hive Inn.

12th October 1904, Church St Saviour,
Charlton Robson, 52, Widower, Innkeeper, Son of Charlton Robson, Engineman (deceased).
Married
Ellen Hood, 48, Widow, daughter of John Sisterson, Forester, (deceased).
Witnesses: John Robert Reed ; Robert Hutchinson Gibbon

So we are looking for another William Russell Hood, deceased? Who had married Helen Sisterson, in 1886.

Or uncovering a case of Bigamy?
