Ivy Cain in 1911 Census
« on: Tuesday 15 April 25 10:43 BST (UK) »
My Great grandfather Thomas Cain was not at home in Halifax with his family for the 1911 Census.  He seems to be a visitor in Glasshoughton at a large family of Smiths.  At the very bottom of the list is another visitor Ivy Cain aged three.  I am completely unaware of the existence of Ivy and wonder if the 1921 Census will give information on whose child she was.  A look-up please.

Have you checked the original of the 1911 Census showing Thomas at Glass Houghton?
It is transcribed as Ivy Cain but the original surname is NOT Cain - it's quite different. It's a transcription error.

What site are you using?  Ancestry have the correct transcription from the image & as shown in reply above - she is very clearly not Cain

Did your Thomas cain have a daughter called Emma. If so she married a William barker and the Ivy barker with Thomas in 1911 is his granddaughter

Thank you all for sorting that out for me.  I didn't have access to the original scan.  Thomas had one son and four daughters all married by 1911, so for a grandchild to have the Cain surname she would have been my grandad.s sister and I would have known.

BARKER, IVY       mmn CAIN
GRO Reference: 1908  M Quarter in HALIFAX  Volume 09A  Page 379

Her mother Emma was Thomas Cain's daughter. She appears with mother/grandmother in 1921 census. Thomas Cain has died by 1921.
