628 Regiment

Hello, Does anybody know of any information regards The Royal Artillery 628 Regiment? I understand it was formed 1st July 1940. Enlistment mainly of soldiers evacuated from Dunkirk. Any and all information very much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

Thank you for your reply. I've very limited access to The Royal Artillery WW2 records. And unfortunately my late Dad's WW2 service record. But, I'm well aware he was one of the many who were evacuated from Dunkirk May/June 1940. After which he enlisted into the RA. Other than landing at Normandy D-Day +4 that's it. Recently I've discovered his RA service number and and his then regiment 628. And that he enlisted 1st July 1940. So, the information received, reference 628 regiment was formed during 1945 has thrown me a bit!!! I'm just going to have to dig some more. Thanks again.

Have you looked for a tracer card on Ancestry?

Thanks. I've not got access to Ancestry or any other subscription site. But, if that is the only way to access and therefore discovery the required information? Then I may have to take the plunge!! Thanks again.

His army records have been catalogued by the National Archives and you can request a copy.

There is a Royal Artillery tracer card for him, which has the enlistment date of 1 July 1940, and notes that he came to 628 Regiment from Heavy Anti Aircraft wef 31 January 1945. He moved to 631 Regiment in July 1945. There's also a WW2 medal application card on which he notes that he was attached to the 1st Dorsets.
