Alice Edge of Nantwich
« on: Tuesday 29 April 25 12:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find details about my great aunt, Alice Edge.

She was born in the December quarter of 1889, and would have left school at 10 or 11 years old.

She went into ‘service’, apparently to a family in Yorkshire.

I don’t know how many years she stayed ‘in service’, but she never married.

Her parents were Edward Edge (born c.1854) and Jane Wainwright (born c.1854). They lived in Millstone Lane, Nantwich. I remember visiting Alice with my mother – probably in 1965 – in Pillory Street, Nantwich.

Can anyone offer me any further details of her?

Thank you.

In the Jan/Feb/March Q of 1966 there was a death registered of an Alice EDGE. Sub registration district of Nantwich. The age recorded was 76, so a birth year of c. 1890.
The age and location look promising.

Here's the burial which I think matches the above death registration. Does the address ring a bell?

I'm 99% sure there's someone on Ancestry with your Alice EDGE in their tree. Does the username herbert1914 mean anything to you?

If not, it might be worth reaching out to this person on Ancestry. I can't see the family trees from this person as they keep them private, but it is possible to message them through Ancestry.

I assume you have Alice on the census.
I can see her in Nantwich in 1891 and 1901. 55 Millstone Lane in 91 & 01. There are 3 separate households on the same page of the 1901 census with Edge's.
I can see Alice in Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1911 and 1921. Alice appears as a domestic servant on both these censuses.

I've not, so far, come up with a strong contender for Alice in 1939.

Hi,

I've just read through your other thread about Alice EDGE as shared by Alan above. Was there something specific you were looking for that isn't covered in the other thread? It's quite a detailed post with lots of interesting leads.

Did you access any of the wills mentioned? Or Alice's funeral notice in the newspaper? Or buy any of the relevant certificates?

Dear Rowan Tree,

Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes – I’ve bought Alice’s birth certificate, and have ordered the three wills (two from Benjamin Illingworth – one to his son, the other to his daughter). Yes, Alice left a will, which surprised me. The only thing I don't yet have is the newspaper article of her funeral (Nantwich Chronicle, 13 January, 1966).

As I probably mentioned in the other posts, she was my grandmother’s older sister. I remember visiting her with my mother, and hers was the first funeral I ever went to. (I was looked after on the day by two of her friends, Elsie and Daisy Chesters, who lived next door to us.)

I have two paintings, possibly by Frank Holl – ‘Hush’ and ‘Hushed’. They were apparently given to Alice when she left ‘service’. (She was with the Illingworth family for almost 30 years, so I’m assuming that they were a gift from them.) If they are mentioned in one of the wills, that may go some way to indicating their provenance.

But a different issue: I’ve mentioned Elsie and Daisy Chesters - two sisters. They were very much my childminders, and through them I learn to knit, crochet, embroider, etc. They were like my ‘real’ grandparents, but because they weren’t family, I’ve never looked into their background. However, they were very dear to me.

I think I’d like to find out more.

The only thing I know is that there was a Whitchurch connection, and that a boy called Christopher – same age as me - also used to stay with them occasionally.

This forum seems extremely helpful, so I think I’ll make that a second line of research.

Thank you again,

Neil
