Peter Turner
« on: Friday 09 May 25 15:41 BST (UK) »
Peter Turner was probably born in Scotland around 1839, the son of Irish parents, Charles Turner and his wife, Margaret

The first time I can pick them up on a census is in 1851, living in Sunderland, where Charles was employed as a dock labourer.

Charles year of birth was given as 1808 - place of birth Ireland
Margaret year of birth was given as 1811 - place of birth Ireland

They have five children with them;
Elizabeth born in Ireland around 1836
John born in Scotland around 1837
Sarah born in Scotland around 1839
Peter born in Scotland around 1841 (I think it was nearer to 1839)
James born in Sunderland around 1846

I thought I had found James' birth registration which indicated that his mother's name was 'Hunt', however, this refers to another James Turner, who was the son of James Turner and his wife, Sarah.
They were living in John Street, Dawdon in 1861, with other children, Thomas, Francis, John and Isabella (all Sunderland births and all Turner/Hunt combos).

I think I have found Peter Turner in 1861 - he is in Devonport prison, Devon. Place of birth given as Sunderland, year of birth given as 1839, occupation  a waterman.

I then think he married Mary Chicken in Sunderland (Holy Trinity) in 1862.

By 1871, they were living in Vine Street, Sunderland, where Peter was a dock labourer - place of birth given as Sunderland.
Children;
Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Margaret and Eleanor.

Peter died in Sunderland in 1872; age given as 32 years.

Mary Chicken had another three girls, Isabella, Theresa and Jane (the latter two being illegitimate.)

There is another Peter Turner, born in Kelloe in 1839 to a Samuel Turner (who also used the surname of Duff), and his wife, Ann Blackburn.
But they were miners, and I believe that that particular Peter may have died in 1854.

Can anybody find the 1st Turner family prior to 1851 or any of them (with the exception of Peter), after this date?

Many Thanks
Sue

This newspaper report looks relevant to the Peter Turner who was jailed

from what I can see in a web search Durham Militia Artillery was a part time volunteer regiment, so perhaps by the time of the census (7th April 1861) he had been discharged from serving and waterman was his previous, civilian occupation?
