Dray Family, 1871, Canterbury
« on: Thursday 15 September 05 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hi!
I wonder if anybody could help me out with a family in Canterbury in the 1871 Census? The Dray family were at 32 King Street Canterbury in the 1861 census and consisted of;
James Dray Head, aged 31 Baker Master, Born Woolwich
Isabella      Wife,   aged 31                        Born Canterbury
Martha J      Dau,   aged 7                          Born Holmer
James         Son,    aged 5                          Born Deal
Isabella      Dau,    aged 3                          Born Canterbury
In the 1881 they have moved to 6 Black Griffin Lane, Canterbury St Peter
and now consist of;
 James DRAY         Head    M      51    Woolwich, Kent,    Tanner
 Isabella DRAY      Wife     M       49   Canterbury, Kent,
 Sarah A. DRAY     Dau               13    Canterbury, Kent,    Scholar
 George R. DRAY   Son               13    Canterbury, Kent,    Scholar
 Charles DRAY      Son               10     Canterbury, Kent,   Scholar
I feel that there is a gap in the ages of the children and some are not shown?
This would be helped by the 1871 census to show which children were still at home and also new arrivals in the family?
If anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

Hi Bram,

Just wondered about your interest in the Drays of Canterbury listed in this thread- they are my direct ancestors.

Hello Brian

That's an old thread?  The family situation is, my wife's mother was an Eggleton and her mother, a Singleton. She was in fact - Daisy Esther Neech Singleton, the sixth of seven children born to George Singleton and Phoeby (Neech). Their youngest, (7th) child was Susannah Neech Singleton who went on to marry George Robert Dray on 24th December 1898 in Hendon, Middlesex and they had I think one child, Wilfred G Dray? I hope that answers a few questions for you?

Kind regards,

Bram Taylor

Thanks - just wondered what your link was and if I could assist with the Dray connection as I have lots of info. It's a rare name and an unusual to find people asking about them

Cheers,

Brian

Alex,

Thanks for the message. I'm particularly interested in Drays in Gillingham, Chatham, Greenwich, and Woolwich. In particular, in still hunting for a George Dray born about 1774. He died 4 Sep 1837 at Greenwich. He married an Elizabeth Coney at Gillingham in 1797, but his baptism remains elusive and the hunt in surrounding parish registers continues!

Regards,

Brian Dray
