Royal Navy question
« on: Thursday 15 September 05 15:13 BST (UK) »
In 1861 England census I found this entry:

RG9/4441  Fol 294  Page 3  Corfu Road.

William Matthews. Age 32, Born  c1829, Portsmouth, Hampshire married - Captains Steward  Royal Navy  Vessel  Algiers.

Apparently, William died some time after this as his wife, living in Bermondsey, Surrey is a widow on the 1871 census, and I can find no further record of him on any census after this one.

I have searched for his death on FreeBmd, but there are just too many entries,(how would the place he died be recorded on BMD entries if he died at sea for instance?) Unless I can narrow it down I haven't much hope of finding  him on 1837 online.

I am aware that The National Archives, Kew are releasing the Royal Navy service records for this period soon, until then, has anyone any suggestions about how I could find out whether he died whilst serving in the Navy, and if so where would this death be recorded?

Could someone please help?

margaret

Hi Margaret

There are some separate registers for the forces at the Family Records Centre and these are available to search online http://www.1837online.com in the overseas section (pay per view)

Best wishes
