Windy Hall Undermillbeck Windermere COMPLETE THANK YOU
« on: Saturday 17 September 05 13:29 BST (UK) »
My Routledge ancestors in 1871 were living at Windy Hall and ten years earlier were at Matson's Ground.  Do these still exist? Was Windy Hall a building of any significance?

thanks

Try putting Windy Hall Westmorland into Google.  One of the hits is http://www.thisisthelakedistrict.co.uk/leisure/homesandgardens/index.var.712430051..11.php
I assume that might work for Matson's Ground too...

Thanks Andrea,

I had tried various other combinations in Google with no effect.  I haven't found a successful combination for Matson's Ground yet.

Most of the responses for Windy Hall are of course for a hotel in Cumbria which can't be the right place.  The will is interesting but proves nothing about about the current day.  However it looks worth pursuing.

Hi David

have a look at this site:

http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:id6x8-6BfVEJ:www.stevebulman.f9.co.uk/cumbria/windermere.html+undermillbeck&hl=en

refers to "Matson-Grand" a hamlet in Undermillbeck that the footnotes think should be "Matson Ground".  Couldn't resist googling it (without Undermillback) - you only get a few responses but included are a few that seem to indicate that it was called both Matson Grand and Ground.

Roly Grigg's online place index for the 1851 lists a "Matsons" as being part of the transcription for Undermillbeck North, Undermillbeck South & Crook.  http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/PlacesLtoM.htm.  The name index is available for this area on-line at http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/2442Fols139-164SurnamesOnl.html and lists some Routledges.  You can get the full transcript from http://www.cumbriafhs.com/.

Also worth typing in "Matson Grand" into Streetmap.co.uk or try this link http://www.streetmap.co.uk/etc_etc_....  Looks like it still exists and is today a farm http://www.matsongroundorganic.co.uk/.

Windy Hall does also seem to still be in existence and sometimes opens its gardens to the public: http://www.roomcheck.co.uk/scripts/ea_details.asp?dc=cu&wc=CU&venue=5060209 http://www.thewestmorlandgazette.co.uk/leisure/homesandgardens/display.var.599444.0.visiting_other_gardens.php.  Typing Windy Hall into streetmap gets you nothing much - but type in Crook Road, select the Windermere one and you get confirmation this is also in Undermillbeck area.

Finally have a look at this site http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ - type in matson ground into the address search field and you can then selct the address and view a map from the area for 1862.  You can zoom about a bit as well but couldn't find Windy Hall - maybe it was built after 1863?

Still playing with the old maps site and was wrong re Windy Hall - type in the full postcode (LA23 3NE) into the address field and you get your map from 1862!

Hi, Windy Hall and Matson Ground still exist. We live in Windy Hall - have done for the last 27 years. Both are shown on the first OS maps of the area published between 1805 and 1874 (republished by Cassini).
The oldest part of the house seems to have been built in the late 1600's the latest in the late 1800's as stables for a new house close by.
We open our garden under the NGS so can be visited at a price.
