I have another relative or two (one is in Scotland) who's doing the main lot of research :D
but they are from different brothers and sisters, about 3-4 generations ago, so my side is a bit "lost"shall we say ;D

I found this thread interesting as my wife has Cunninghams in her tree..... eventually

1852 Miles Connachin born Ireland married in Airdrie.
1st daughter is recorded as Mary Ann Cunachin
2nd daughter is Sarah Cunningham
Thereafter all members of the family are Cunninghams and all the above death records are Cunningham

Hello from New Zealand

Yes, it is interesting to see the different spellings of Cunningham.   I am stuck now with the Irish connection, and don't seem to be able to find out where in Ireland my Cunninghams came from.

Regards
Kathleen

Part of this family tree is included on this website:

http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~howiefamily/276/72.htm

My connection is to Andrew Cunningham s/o James Cunningham, lithographic printer, and Susan Anderson.

In 1900 Andrew Cunningham, a joiner, aged 24 married Esther Park REID aged 25 at the Masonic Hall Alexandra Parade Glasgow (civil regs 644/03 0577).

Esther Park REID was born 1875/6 at Glasgow (1891 Census 644/03 078/03 003) daughter of Samuel REID, a furnaceman at the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Works in Garngad, and Margaret YOUNG.

I have not traced any descendants of Andrew CUNNINGHAM.

Hello Nick

Thanks for your post.

James Cunningham's parents were Andrew Cunningham and Agnes Brash.

James married Susan Anderson and their daughter Agnes Bell Cunningham was my grandmother.   I always wondered where the Bell surname came from.   It turns out that James' sister Agnes married Thomas Bell son of John Bell and Margaret Brash, so I think that Margaret and Agnes Brash were sisters, so I have cousins marrying, they were the branch of the family who went to America.   Thomas Bell died 1905 Mt Pleasant, Sanpete, Utah.    Agnes died 1905 Colorado Springs.

During WW1, Andrew Cunningham and his wife Esther resided at 49 Fisher Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow.  A frequent lodger there was Esther's nephew Pte Samuel REID of 10/11th Highland Light Infantry who sadly was killed in April 1917 at the battle of Arras, France:

I have a few letters which Samuel wrote from 49 Fisher Street to his father Robert Reid, a chemist at copper mines in Tharsis Spain.  A letter dated 8 October 1916 refers to uncle Andy (I assume Andrew Cunningham) who sought exemption from National Service and lodged appeals to various tribunals.  I do not know if Andy was successful as there was no further news from Samuel.

In 1881 the family of James Cunningham and Susan Anderson lived at 112 Abercromby St Glasgow.

James CUNNINGHAM was 26 a lithographic printer b. Coatbridge LKS
Susan CUNNINGHAM was 25 b. Kilwinning AYR
Andrew CUNNINGHAM was 4 b. Glasgow LKS
David CUNNINGHAM was 2 b. Glasgow LKS

Jane CUNNINGHAM, an elder sister of Andrew and David must have died an infant as she does not appear with the family in the 1881 census.

Cunningham is a prolific name in Ireland so clues as to where in Ireland your Cunninghams came from will be found in records kept in Glasgow.  Fortunately you have six born in Ireland in the 1841 census (assuming the parents were as well), so if you can trace each of them in subsequent census returns, one of them may have recorded the County of their birth.  I was fortunate that the father of Esther Park Reid recorded his birthplace as County Derry in one of the census returns, rather than just Ireland, so you may get lucky!
