Thanks

I hope that we are talking about Eaton Bray rather than Eaton Socon, which is much bigger.

Sorry, but I could see no Eeles in Eaton Bray, although the quality of the images was poor in places, and a christian name might have helped where the surname was largely indistinct. A bit more information never goes amiss.

Regards

David

Hi David
Appreciate your efforts. I am looking for a Benjamin Eeles who would have been 12 in 1841 (mother was Sarah or Esther). Not sure which Eaton though - on a later census Ben gave his place of birth as Eton, Bedfordshire - as his wife came fron Roxton I guess this was really Eaton - but which one?
Regards

Roxton is just along the road from Eaton Socon, and in Beds is diametrically opposite to Eaton Bray, NE/SW corners.

I'll look at Socon now.

Can we go back to basics here Mike, as I can't see any Eeles in Eaton Socon either. And there are no Eeles burials in either Eaton Socon or Eaton Bray on the NBI.

I have struggled to find them on censuses!

I assume I have found the right family in Islington in 1861, but Benjamin age 32 is shown as being born at St Helens Parish Middx, and his wife Sarah as being born in Roxton Hunts (which is a nonsense as there is no Roxton in Hunts).

I finally found them in 1891 where Benjamin Eales is indexed as Raymond! born Eton and another hand has added Bucks (not Beds) (his wife Sarah is indexed as aged 4! born in Bedford)

Ah! More useful. In 1881 they are spelt Eiles, Benjamin born Ealing, plus 7 sons and a daughter. Sarah's birthplace has been transcribed as Hoxton, but looking at the image it might just be Roxton.

In 1871 they are indexed as Ebes! (understandably). Benjamin is shown as born Ealing, and Sarah Bedford.

If you don't have access to the censuses let me know and I'll give you full details.

I think the majority verdict is Ealing! But I can't help you there with earlier censuses I'm afraid.

Regards

David

Hi David
I really do appreciate your efforts. It looks as if I will have to accept that the references to Eaton were incorrect and as I know that the family finished up in the Islington area then I will concentrate my 1841 searches around that area. The family did migrate east from Oxford via Brill (were there are several BMD clues).
Thank you for the other census information - I was unaware of most of it. Time to stand back and take stock I think.
Regards & thanks again.

The name could [as ever] be spelt a number of ways!

Were they tradespeople?  Try the http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

Don't forget the IGI too [which might give you further clues] http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyBedford.htm#PageTitle

There is also the Beds Archive search site[which isnt complete yet but may help]: http://blars.adlibsoft.com/form.html

All the best
