Scotty. Sorry dont know which bookshop ,I would think that most Councils would keep such records in which case try the Scottish borders council Newtown St Boswells on 01835 824000 which covers Galashiels or maybe you could try the Records office at The Hub Hawick

I was in Selkirk last year 2008 (I'm from Peebles, but live in W. Aust) and saw the war memorial ourside Sir Walter Scott's courthouse. On it was the name of my grandfather's brother, Andrew (aka Dan) Brown, who was KIA in France (don't know the year, but about 1916-1918) He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps as a private. He would have been in his mid 20's when killed. HIs parents were James Brown and Annie Turnbull. If you still have the Roll of Honour Book, would you be able to confirm my info, and any other info you can find, (pretty) please! I also have his brother Jock, who served as a private in the Black Watch in WW!, but have no info on him at all. Much obliged. Maureen

Just as a bit of interest, here is a post on the fabulous Scottish War Memorial website of Selkirk war memorial:

http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/warmemscot-ftopic1138.html

There is also a post with a scan of the roll of honour on it.

I don't know how complete it is, but its worth a check.

It looks like a Pte Brown RAMC is listed.

Kind Regards
Tracey

Hi Dawn,

I know it's a few years since you posted this but, worth a try.

Have you any details on James Davidson, 14689 of McRae's Battalion (16th Royal Scots)?  I know he did not survive and his parents were from Cannon Street in Selkirk.  I wondered if, like the Morayshire ROH, details of his employment are given.  If so, I wonder if he was a medical orderly, nurse or somesuch.

Hope you can help.  Ranald

There is no Military headstone in Selkirk Cemeteries to James Davidson.I am surprised. He was 30 yrs when he died in France He was born 16-3-1889 in selkirk to selkirk parents John Davidson and Elizabeth Goodfellow and they were married in sellkirk 23-1-1885 and had 5 children. In the 1911 census they are living at 36 Cannon Street and he is a PIECER in the woollen mill.Do you have the Commonwealth War Graves Commission details of his grave in France and the free certificate.? Hope this helps.
