Hi Brian

Thats interesting I naively thought that such a Scottish regiment would only take from there, but in time of war I suppose we are all as good as the next!

             Thanks Tazzie

It wasn't just during wartime.  Before 1882 any regiment could send a recruiting party anywhere they liked.  After the Cardwell reforms and the more extensive and stronger geographical links that came into being, the practice declined, In addition, after around that date, depending on the method of entry, the person had limited choice as to their regiment.

Hi Ibi,
Thanks for that bit of info. Something I was not aware about.
The two Gordon Highlanders in my line would have joined around 1896 which is just after the date you mentioned, but they could have been allowed in because of the situation in India.

Meant to add that the situation could have been influenced if they were already reservists.

Hi Ibi,
Do you know if there is an online site for those wounded in the Boer War?

Hi Brian

Not to my knowledge but it's a long time since my researches related to a Boer War soldier, but a quick Google leads to http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Databases/BoerDetailed/index.htmlm but it appears to be a partial listing only.
