Does anyone know if a list of servicing police officers in Dudley in the 1870's is available online?

Hi Brian,

According to the West Midlands Police Museum at http://www.westmidlandspolicemuseum.co.uk/subpages/Dudley.htm

"Prior to 1920 any officer serving in Dudley would have been a member of the Worcestershire Constabulary. However, records for that force are not currently available to the public although that situation may change in late 2004. An update will appear here in due course."

The museum can be contacted at:

West Midlands Police Museum

Sparkhill Police Station,
639 Stratford Road,
Sparkhill,
Birmingham B11 4EA.
Tel: 0121 626 7181.
Fax: 0121 626 7066

Cheers
Tabitha

hi,
My grandfather, Albert Phillips was in the Dudley police force from 1890 - 1917, when he was pensioned for life on £57.9s.11p per annum. In 1998 I contacted:

              R.J. Pooler, Inspector,
              Criminal Justice Support Dept,
              Hindlip Hall,
              Hindlip,
              Worcester,
              WR3 8SP.
        Tel. No. 01527 586017 (direct line) or 01905 723000, Ext. 2554/2797/2329

He may have now retired but it is worth a phone call to ask. He provided a precis of gramps's career. Have a go!!
rob.

HI Ro,
Thanks for that piece of information.
I will try to contact him.
Did the information you received contain any other details? I have already got my G.granfathers date of joining and leaving police service in Dudley and his police number but I wondered if they had a service record?

Hi, Brian,
Yes there were other details given sic:
Date joined, age, description
Where born
Married to...
Children,
Postings,
Merit class,
When pensioned.
Other documents revealed that he was at Kates Hill, Dudley in 1914 and was also a member of the Dudley Police/Fire Brigade. The Fire Brigade in those days was run by the police.
I also found some of his records on the internet but, unfortunately I can't find the website. Try looking under Worcestershire Police archives. If I can find the address I will let you know. A book where you may find info is:

"From Fruit Trees to Furnaces" by Bob Pooler. It is the history of the Worcestershire Constabulary.
Good hunting!!
Rob.
