Hi do you know where this farm is/was the next listing on the 181 is Shellands Lane, is that still there?  Does anyone have any photos or information circa 1881 would love to share .  My Great Great Uncle lived here and farmed 30 acres.

By Googling...

Shellands Lane is in Alveston, next village to Thornbury and seems to be at right angles to the A38 Gloucester to Bristol road, near the Alveston House Hotel.  The reference I found is to Jekka McVicar's Herb Farm and that is how I have derived the location.  Maybe it would be worth phoning there and asking if anyone knows of the farm?  It might even be the same property?

I am often in the area if I can help...

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Is your rellie Austin PEARCE?

The butcher in Thornbury is still PEARCEs - or it was last time I looked!  There are still PEARCEs farming at Oldbury and Morton, both near Thornbury.

hi there

Yes my rellie is Austin Pearce my Great Great Grand Father and Austin were brothers, Austin and my G G GF 's father was a Samuel Pearce and he too was a farmer originally then it seems he moved to the Jolly Black Horse and Beaufort Arms both in Mangotsfield? so hence my previous posting about the Jolly Black Horse.

I am going to write to the Butchers to see if they are related!to me, thank you for replying

Owlsnest farm is shown on the 1/25000 OS map on http://www.multimap.com/
Use the Advanced search and look for Shellards Lane, Alveston

Alternatively use http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Type the address Shellards lane, Alveston click the dot button against  address  and then click Search

There is a magnifier function on Old Maps and also a print Map function.

(Edit)
I have just checked the location of the herb farm mentioned above, Owls Nest is on the Alveston side of the M5 and the Herb farm is just the otherside of the M5.
Malmesbury- Bishop.
Gloucestershire-Bishop,Hicks,Higgs,Hill,Hooper,Hopkins,Pitcher,Robertson,Stinton,Terret,Woodruff.

Hi

What a great thread.

My ancestors, the Champions, lived in Shellards Lane, and are listed underneath Owls Nest Farm in 1881.
I wondered if anybody had any info at all on them.

Best wishes

I am interested in The Champion Family of Shellards Lane. George Champion born 1815 I think his mother was Elizabeth Champion born 1771. Did they live at Owl Barn Farm?

Hi there

I am descended from George Champion's brother, James (born c. 1799)
I do not really have much information on this part of the family.

I found out that they lived in Shellards Lane from the census returns, although as far as I remember, a house number was not given. The entry was just underneath Owl's Nest Farm, in 1881.

Best wishes
