1851 census Crawford
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 10:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am tryng to trace my ancestors who lived in Crawford. The last chil we know was born in1816 and we also know that they died before 1855.

Their names are James Templeton and his wife Margaret m s McQueen. Their ages are unknown but they may be living with their daughter Ann b 1811 who never married.

Thanks
Carawa  :)

Hi Falkryn

I guess that this confirms that James Templeton and his wife Margaret McQueen had died before 1851. I'm not sure where to go next. maybe they will turn up in the 1841 census.

I had the children's births but thanks for looking.

There is one Ann Templeton age 39 apparently living on her own in the Blytheswood area of Glasgow in the 1851 index

while searching something else I stumbled upon a partial 1841 census for Crawford Village which has

James TEMPLETON, 25, laborer
Mary, 25
Marion, 6
James, 3
Margaret, 1

as the only Templeton family.

Hi Falkryn

These are indeed my relatives. It looks increasingly likely that James Templeton and Margaret McQueen died before 1841 so it may be difficukt to track their deaths.

Thanks for all your help.

If the children are not on the '51 census, try somewhere else.

A great many of my ancestors originated in the Crawford area, and most of them de-camped sometime between 1841 and 1851.   Even though they were not related to each other at that time, they all seemed to go to the same places - try New Cumnock, Patna and Dalmellington in Ayrshire.  Sanquhar is also worth a try and Carsphairn in Kirkcudbrightshire.

Ayrshire: McCormick (mack); McFadzean; Kerr; Brown; Paton; McGregor; McDonald; Moffat; Connel; Bone
Dumfries/Lanarks: (pre-1840) McDonald; Moffat; Bone; Hamilton; Hyslop; Sandiland; Bredwood; Kerr; Brown
Ireland (pre-1820) McCormick (Monaghan)
