John Robert Sherratt's Family

Help!!

I am trying to trace my the family history of my grandad's step brother John Robert Sherratt.

John was born in Hartington in 1900, died in 1977 and is buried in Hartington Church with his wife Irene who was born circa 1907 and died in 2000.  The grave stone mentions their son Jeffery.

Who was Irene?? I have tried the church records to no avail and don't know where to look next.

Similarly when was Jeffery born?? is he still alive, what is his story??

Did John and Irene have any other children??  The questions could go on for ever.

Can anyone in the land of RootsChat shed any light on this side of my family??

Hi Koko

You could try contacting local newspapers that cover Hartington and place an appeal similar to the one you have listed here.  I did this myself recently and i was amazed just how many replies I got from former neighbours, schoolfriends, anonymous people  and distant relatives. It is worth a try.

JOHN ROBERT SHERRATT was born in 1900 son of Samuel !863 and Edith 1876..he married IRENE SMITH second Qtr of 1931 in Ashbourne District.
Irene Smith..you say was born 1907........there are three possibilities all born 1907..but only one carries a single first name Irene;

IRENE SMITH born 1907 at Elton near Hartington..but nearer to Matlock,.. daughter of Clement and Frances Edith.

The other two were born in Derby and at ilkeston'

You need the Marriage Certificate of John Robert and Irene to tie it up properly..or the Birth Certificate of the son Jeffrey.

I'll let you know anything I find.

I have looked in vain for another Irene Smith..and I now believe that I have the right one...If so, the following is relevant:
IRENE SMITH born 1907 Elton..16 miles only from Hartington..daughter of CLEMENT SMITH and his wife Francis Edith ASTBURY. who were married JAS 1904.

Clement Smith was baptised at Elton 22.12.1878 son of GEORGE SMITH and his wife AMBROSINE WAIN..who were married 24.02.1870............I am able to trace this family much further back..if a Marriage certificate for John Robert proves my point..............

Interestingly..the three traceable children of  SAMUEL SHERRATT and EDITH GOODWIN (married Ashbourne District AMJ 1900)..........only ADA was baptised at Hartington (24.07.1904)..my Hartington PR's go up to 1910..and unless he was baptised as an adult. JOHN ROBERT was NOT baptised at Hartington.

His Birth Registration is in Ashbourne District last Quarter 1900...........and that of his son JEFFREY 2nd qtr 1937.............a year before me, and i'm hale and very hearty..so there is no reason why he shouldn't be also.
