William Chalmers and Ruth Matilda Penn, Sydney

Looking for any information on William CHALMERS (b 1881, NZ) and his wife Ruth Matilda PENN. They married in New Zealand and moved to Australia before WW1. They lived in Sydney and  Bill was still alive in Balmain in 1952.

I have had a look at the National Archives Site here in Oz for you in case William Chalmers had served in WW1 or 2 but found nothing on him.

The New South Wales BDM online for deaths do not search up to 1952.

Do you have any other relevant information? Maybe names of children etc? On re-reading your post - is his surname Chalmers or Penn? I took Penn as his wife's maiden name.

Hi Noelene, thanks for that, the surname is CHALMERS and his wifes maiden name is Penn.   

Not much other info other than a couple of kids, no names or where they were born.

I do know he was still alive in 1952 in Balmain, from a sisters death notice.

www.bdm.nsw.gov.au   Click on Historical Indexes on L.H. side, then on Search Historical Indexes.

The Deaths only go up to 1945, but you never know what you might find on children etc.

I was wondering how easy it is to check the death indexes in Aussie.  Here we have copies of the indexes in every major library.  A search from 1952 to 1980 wouldn't take that long over here. 

Do you have separate State indexes ?

William was born in 1880, so he could still have been alive in 1980, more likely some time in 60- 70s.

Living in Balmain, where would he be buried ?

Yes, each State here his it's own birth,marriage & death indexes. Because of privacy laws they can only publish up to a certain number of years ago, so anything "modern" is not available to general public.


Did you have a check through the web sites I gave you? They will be your best bet at this stage.

Another way could be going through the Electoral rolls each year, but that would be a huge job and not really feasible.

I live in Victoria, so am not familiar with Sydney cemeteries, but someone else reading this post should be able to help you with that. Maybe also have some other suggestions for you.

I just checked the NSW bdm web site I gave you and there are 18 William Chalmers died between 1951 and 1974.

Two lived in Balmain

one died 1961 - parents John and Ellen Kate
the other died 1951 - parents David and Mary

Right, excellent update on deaths,

Leaves me with one problem on the 1965 death,  No parents listed.   What is on the death certficate that could help?

Or he made it past 1974  !!!!! (would be 94, so possible)

Then there are two possibles on probates ?  late 1970s, but not living in Balmain.
