What year is this picture?
« on: Monday 26 September 05 20:46 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me anything about this picture, such as what year it may have been taken.

Thanks
Karen

It is a wild guess, but it looks like the latter half of the
1800's. I'll have a deeper dig.

Interesting picture.  I don't think they are British.  It also looks as if there is some sort of tent/make-shift shelter in the background on the left-hand edge of the picture.

I would have said 1890 to maybe 1910.  Two of the bearded gents remind me of pictures of George V and Nicholas II.  The one on the left looks a little more unkempt.  Can anyone enlarge his cap band - it might be possible to see the writing on it and so name the boat!

I am only guessing but I think these are Russian sailors - about 1880 perhaps.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

I think they look more likely to be  Russian sailors  than English. One fellow in the front row is wearing a ' Wee Willie Winkie ' type hat - was this casual garb for all sailors ? What is the fellow extreme left holding please ?

Hi there,

What clues make you think they are from somewhere else?

I'll try and enlarge the capband if I can.

My posting seems to have dissapeared.
My first guess was either the Crimean war
or the American Civil War.Of course both could be
wildly wrong. The man on the left is cleaning the barrel
of a rifle.

I'm not having any luck enlarging the capband.
