George Vennell
« on: Thursday 29 September 05 09:04 BST (UK) »
Wonder if anyone can help. I have just received the marriage of George Vennell and Martha Chidgey and would like to see if I can find more info on them. They were married in the Parish church of Bathwick in 1839. George's father was a Daniel Vennell a Shoemaker and Martha's father was a John Chidgey also a shoemaker. George was listed as being a shoemaker and Martha was a tailoress.I am sure Martha was born in Kent as I have found her on census giving Dover as her place of birth.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Twiggy.

Do you know when and where they were both born.
What census years would you like looking up. I can try 1861/71/81/91 & 1901.

Dear Caz,
Many thanks for the reply. As far as I know George Vennell was born in Bath, Somerset, anymore than that I don't know.I have the family on the 1861 census, they were in St Marylebone,
George 48  Shoemaker born in Bath, his wife Martha 48 born in Dover Kent, Ellen, 22 born Bath, Harriet 11 born Bath, Henry 7 born St Marylebone, and Charles 1 born St Marylebone.I also found a Harriet Vennell widoq 72 formerly a nurse at Bath, so I don't know if she would have been George's mother.
I have Martha on the 1881 census she was a widow then. There was also a Henry Vennell at Bath a cordwainer he was 42, so he could be George's brother. I will have to try and access the 41 and 51 census to see what I can find, also if I can get to any Parish records for baptisms and marriages.

Hi Twiggy,

Same as you, found them in 1861, Martha is a Widow on the 1871 census living in St Marylebone and in 1881 think she's a Lodger in St Marylebone.

You need to do a seperate request for 1841 & 1851 census.

Dear Caz,
Many thanks for trying. I will have a look at the 1871 census next time I go to the LDS church, and look for Martha.
I will see about hiring the parish records for Bath to see if I can trace more on the family.

Dear Kris,
Many thanks for your help. I know George and Martha were still in Bath in 1851 as Ellen and Harriet their eldest children were born there, Ellen was 22 in 1861 and Harriet was 11 in 1861. I will try and hire the parish records for Bath and see if I can find them.
Many thanks again, also about Daniel and his wife.

Hi Twiggy

I was just wondering if you had been able to link the Bath/Vennell/Shoemakers together.

I have George Vennell from Bath, born in 1840, who came to Canada.  He was also a shoemaker.
His father was William, who appeared to be a gardener.

I have found other Vennell shoemakers in Bath and wondered if you knew more about the families.
Henry born about 1819 to Daniel and Mary
Your George married to Martha
Charles born about 1808.
