Manchester Regiment
« on: Monday 03 October 05 15:00 BST (UK) »
Hi All,
Hope someone can point me in the right direction. I'm looking for
Robert Cameron d 1904, Pensioner of the Manchester Regiment.
When he married in 1886 his address was The Barracks, Ashton Under Lyne. I have been unable to find him or his family in the 1891 census. I did contact the Museum of The Manchesters and they sent me this reply:-

"Neither of the regular battalions were at Ashton-under-Lyne in 1886-7 - the first was in the UK at Shorncliffe and later Aldershot, and the 2nd were on the North West Frontier of India.  This suggests that he was with the depot (the permanent staff at Regimental HQ dealing with various matters such as recruiting, stores that sort of thing) at the time, but gives no clue as to his previous or later service.  The only medals that the Manchesters were awarded anywhere around this time was the India General Service Medal issued to some, but not, all of 2nd Battalion for their part in the Miranzai valley expedition of 1891 - it is perfectly possible that he went out to 2nd Battalion by then as battalions in India did suffer quite heavy wastage through cholera and the like".

I've looked on the National Archives site and found nothing. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Cammy
