Pollocks in Glasgow

Hi all,

I have a copy of a marriage entry which I downloaded from Scotlandspeople, the problem I have is that I have hit an enourmous brickwall, I am unable to find out anything at all about the people on the marriage cert. This is a very long shot, but I'm hoping somebody may be able to find something about at least one of these people:

Marriage: 5th June 1863, Gorbals, Glasgow.

Bachelor: William Pollock age 20 living at 57or59 Centre Street Glasgow.
                Parents: Thomas Pollock (deceased) and Janet Pollock (nee McIvor).

Spinster: Elizabeth Pollock age 21 living at 197 Main Street Gorbals Glasgow.
               Parents: John Pollock and Isabella Pollock (nee Hil) (deceased).

I think Elizabeth may have had 2 sisters, Isabella and Charlotte. Other than that, I know nothing about the parents, I don't even know if they were from Scotland, I have been told that McIvor is an Irish name (?) Also, it seems that they were married at Elizabeth's home, was that a common thing in those days??

Hope somebody can find something out, or give me any tips on where to look??

Hi Millerina,  Please read the following very carefully and double check it if you can.

Re Elizabeth Pollock.
I think I've found her in both the 1851 and 1861 census index

1851 census taken Hutchiestown 607 enum dist 3 page 8

John Pollock age 25
David age 13
Isabella age 11
Elizabeth age 9
Agnes Brodie age 37
Agnes Brodie age 11
No sign of his wife Isabella here, so guessing he is a widower.


1861 census taken Tradeston 644/9 enum dist 10 page 24

John Pollock age 44 born Glasgow
Agnes Pollock age 46 born Glasgow
Agnes Brodie age 20 born Glasgow
Elizabeth Pollock age 18 born Glasgow
James Pollock age 4 born Glasgow
John Pollock age 65 born Paisley

Now in IGI there is a marriage for a John Pollock to an Agnes Hill 22nd dec 1851.
Also there is a birth for a James Pollock 3rd sept 1856 to John Pollock and Agnes Hill.

Looks like Agnes Brodie in 1851 went onto marry John Pollock.
As I've said, this will require checking to make sure this is the right family.

Thanks for that info, that could well be her family, its the nearest match I have so far.  Only odd thing is, did they make a mistake and mean 35 for John Pollocks age? Otherwise he would have fathered David at 12??

Sorry to bother you again, but does it give an address or street name for those census pages?? It does seem to be my family, both Isabella and Elizabeth are the right ages, and I know that John's wife Isabella had died before 1863, so it all seems to fit nicely.

Hi Millerina,
                  Sorry, my mistake. John's age should have been 35 in 1851.
It's only a names index I have for both the 1851/61 census, so there are no addresses on them.  You would need to look at the actual census for more info.
                   Hopefully, the 1861 census will be going on-line on 'scotlandspeople' soon.

I'll have to wait for them to release the 1861 census...hope it isn't too long a wait though!!! And after further research today I have found that they are definately the right family, I managed to find the birth of David on Scotlandspeople, and low and behold, the parents are John Pollock and Isabella Hill! So a big thank you for knocking down some of my brickwall!!!
