Depending on when he was born in 1847, of course. Do you know his exact birth date for sure? Age down on census is 'age at last birthday'. It's very common to see ages vary from one census to another, so if you have this from a later census, do not take it for granted.

Of course, if you apply for the marriage certificate, you'll know for sure.

I'd say he's quite a safe bet but you're right one can never tell.

Cheers

The Ship Albion was just over the river from Commercial Road, Willow road walk my home from age 5 to 24. I think the landlord and family were probably distant relatives in the 1940's

Hi Keith
I agree with Tanja wouldn't worry too much about age discrepancies from one census to another, but you're right to be wary - you need certificates to confirm things. It is looking good though ;D
Cheers Jan ;)

Thanks for all your help with my search Tanja & Jan. I have one surviving relative Edith Molly born 1910 who lives near Eley who I must visit to get some memories from.

Keith

Hi, 1845 would make John 16 as on the "Breeze" in Caen in 1861 census. That would mean he was probably on board ship with Matthew his father. Do you know what number Broad Street Mathew & Hannah were living at in the 1871 census. This would be of interest as most of the houses were quite grand.
