Pre WW1 Military Records
« on: Thursday 19 August 04 10:12 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can point me in the right direction on this?

My Great Grandfather Henry Arthur Coleman served in the artillery in WW1. I have a copy of his Medal Index Card. He had married in 1907.

According to 'the family' he served in the Royal Navy aboard HMS Lion before his marriage, but deserted.

Is there anywhere I can find out more about this ? - I presume deserting would have created paperwork somewhere!

Cheers

Chris,

You could try doing a search on him via

http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk

also you could contact them directly as they hold the records for Military.

Also try contacting the regiment he was in as I had trouble finding my own GT Gt Grandfather so contacted the regimental museum for his old regiment and I received wonderful help from them including birth registers etc.

Try contacting these as they may be able to put you in the right direction:

Royal Navy website  -
http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/

Royal Naval Museum - http://www.royalnavalmuseum.org/

Good Luck!
