Unfortunately you don't give any further help re Richard's parents' names, or father's occupation to try and narrow down which Richard Gardiner/Gardener/Gardner you might be interested in depending on the enumerator's spelling preference. Whatever the spelling of his surname there appears to be no Richard with a birthplace Bermondsey within five years of a birth year 1839. I checked on the 1861 census (within two years of a birth year circa 1839) and found nobody there either though there were these two possibles

Richard Gardner abt 1838  London, England A B  Vessels  Royal Navy
Richard Gardener abt 1839  Woolwich, Kent, England Soldier  Tynemouth  Northumberland

Do you have any evidence that Richard Henry survived to adulthood?

If he did the two most likely candidates on the 1851 census are

Richard Gardener abt 1840  St Saviour, Surrey, Son  Southwark St Saviour  Surrey
and
Richard Gardiner abt 1838  Woolwich, Kent, Son  Woolwich  Kent

Can you give any further information about your Richard Henry which might help find him and/or his family on the 1851 census?

Regards
Valda

Many thanks for you help - I do know that he survived childhood married a Mary Maria Lack - then had at least 4 children three of which were in the 1871 Census -unfortunately I do not know his parents names, this is why I am looking for the 1851 Census.  The Southwark option you have found, would be the most likely candidate - is there any chance you can send it to me?
sorry for the lack of information.

Hi KL
Looked on the 1851 Street index no 'Great Guildford Street in Bermondsey' in 1851.  Only  one Street with Guildford in, and found  :

3  Guildford Place, Parish of Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey  - 1560 / 9a & 9b. (pages 17 & 18 of 1094).

GARDNER -  all born Surrey Bermondsey

William A  Head  33  Morocco Leather ?
Ann          Wife   31
H H            son    11  Scholar  **
Matilda     dau      9
Charles    son      7
Ann          dau     5
Emma      dau     3
Susan     dau     20? months

**  Think this is your chap?  It looks like two H's to me, however the first one is slightly different to the first H.  Hope that makes sense.  Cant send a copy unfortunately.

Hope it helps

Sorry I should have said the 1861 census RG9 386 folio 43 not 1871
The eldest son was William, the HH of the 1851 census born circa 1839, not Richard.

The family was still in Camberwell in 1871
RG10 736 folio 40
William A Gardner 53  Bermondsey, Surrey,  Head  Married Leather finisher
Ann Gardner 51  Durham, Wife Married
William H Gardner 31  Bermondsey, Surrey,  Son  Leather finisher
Charles Gardner 28 Bermondsey, Surrey, Son  Leather finisher
Ann Gardner 26  Bermondsey, Surrey, Daughter  Laundress
Emma Gardner 21  Bermondsey, Surrey,  Daughter  Laundress
Edwin Gardner 15  Bermondsey, Surrey, Son  Light Porter
Alice Gardner 13  Camberwell, Surrey,  Daughter
Amelia Gardner 9  Camberwell, Surrey, Daughter

There is the coincidence they were closeby on the 1851 census, 12 years after the birth of the Richard you are interested in, but unless Richard was a twin with William H, or Richard Henry was really William H., they do not seem to have your Richard in their family.
William H. is still living at home in Camberwell on the 1881 census - unmarried.
All the sons seem to follow their father into the leather trade.

Valda
