hello
my g/father was in the Boer War   his name was John Cleator  born 1866 Cumberland  and  lived in Liverpool  from 1881 until he died in 1956/7?   can any one tell me how to look for his records

Depending on when he was discharged (presumably he was too old to fight in WWI), and whether or not he was an officer, you should be able to find him at the National Archives:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/army/step4.htm
(all other ranks).
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/familyhistory/military/army/step1.htm
(for officers).

As well as discharge records there might be pension records.
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

thanks for your message  but my g/father was  to old  in 1914  he was born in 1866     have been on the archives site and looks like he could have been in the 8th of foot Kings Liverpool reg  so will try that path and see were it leads me
