place name similar to Llagemyn
« on: Thursday 20 October 05 22:03 BST (UK) »
I am looking at a family Robert Hughes and Laura Hughes (1861- 1891) living in Festiniog. Her birthplace is listed as Dolwyddelan, Caernarvonshire which I can find but his has been transcribed (hard to read on census) as Llangemyn Denbighshire but I can't find this place. Has anyone any idea what it could be please?
Thanks Heywood

Hi there,

There are,as you might imagine,plenty of place names in Denbighshire which start with Llan......

Here are the main ones which start Llang....

Llangernyw;Llangadwaladr;Llangollen;Llangwm;
Llangynhafal;Llangwyfan.I rather fancy it is Llangernyw.

Hope this is of some assistance to you.Best of luck with your research.

I tried unsucessfully to find these on the 1881 census.
when I clicked on the places in Denbighshire the nearest place to your spelling was Llangedwyn which is now in Powys, just south west of Oswestry.

Are you able to display the actual entry? We welsh people may have have a better chance at deciphering it for you. 8)

Sorry I haven't acknowledged- I was away - After a week's absence I think I found another census which was more clear as Llangernyw - I know I sent this off to my contact and now have to tune myself into research again!
Thanks again everyone for your help.
