Where is/was Budden - Territorial Army Camp?
« on: Thursday 20 October 05 22:10 BST (UK) »
My Grandmother Mabel Urquhart had three brothers who all served in the Army during the First World War, and two of them were in the Royal Field Artillery. Before the war Hector, the eldest, was in the territorial army serving with the 4th Durham (Howitzer) battery, but when war broke out he signed up and his unit became the 4th Northumbrian (County Durham) Howitzer Brigade, part of the 250th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, and he was in D battery. The 250th Brigade was attached to the 50th (Northumbrian) Division of the British Army.

The 50th division sailed from Southampton on 17th April 1915, and were in action on the Western Front within a few days between Ypres and Poperingh.

Now the question - Where is Budden? There is a picture of Hector on horse back taken at the territorial army camp at Budden - but the only reference I can find to Budden on 'Google' is a brewery in Kent! Good place for an army camp, but rather unlikely! Any help or suggestions appreciated.

Thank You Cat One & Liverpool Annie.

The photograph is question is owned by Hector's grandson so I will ask him if Budden could actually be read as Borden, but it sounds a good bet to me.

There is no date on the back, but I do know that Hector was born 20th January, 1892 in South Shields, making him around 22 years old at the out break of WWI. He was badly gassed on 16th November 1917 whilst in action near to Arras, and was transferred to an Edinburgh hospital staying there until December 1817. The Army retained him for one year and finally discharged him as medically unfit in December 1918. He died in Sunderland hospital on 12th November 1920 never having fully recovered. Therefore the picture must have been taken prior to 1917 when he was gassed.

Thank you both for your help and interest.

Is Buxton another possibility?  There was a School of Gunnery at Harpers Hill in Buxton at that time. I think that you need to look further north.

Hi Behind the Frogs,

Thanks for the suggestion of Buxton. I did think Borden might be a bit far south for a Northumbrian Brigade. Although I suppose it is possible that they used 'Borden Camp' as a transit camp before leaving Southampton on 17th April, 1915.

Has anyone got suggestions on how I can find out if it was Buxton or Borden? I feel sure that it is not going to be 'Budden' whatever the outcome!

Hi Patsy

You are right in thinking the name is Budden, in fact it is now called Barry/Budden and it is still used nowadays as a training area for Regular and Territorial soldiers.
It is situated on the coast between Monifieth and Carnoustie on the east coast of Scotland closeby the city of Dundee on a promintory called Barry links.
