Cheshire Census Help Please 41/51
« on: Saturday 22 October 05 11:15 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace my 5xgrandparents, William and Ellen TURNER.

My 4xgrandfather Solomon Turner married at Manchester Cathedral in 1844 and William's occupation is stated as a PUDDLER.

Solomon was baptised in Wilmslow in 1817 along with 2 brothers James (1815) and William (1819)

I can't find Solomon on the 1841 census for Lancashire so he may still have been at home with his parents.

On the 1861 census, I've located the following family:

William Turner 77 b. Staffordshire, Yorkshire, England Head
Ellen Turner 74 b.  Bollin Fee, Cheshire, England Wife
James Turner 46  Bollin Fee, Cheshire, England Son

The family are living at Edge View, Pownell Fee, Cheshire

The names and the ages are consistent with this being my family but William's occupation says SADDLER.

I'd be very grateful if anyone with the census could check this address in previous census to see whether there's any sign of any members of the above family or anyone with names that would fit!

Thanks

Lou

Thanks for this Su, you've gone to so much trouble!

I'll take a good look at it and try and see whether there's a pattern but some of the names that have cropped up (Oswald and Ellen) are in future generations as well....coincidence or maybe not!

Solomon married in 1844 in Manchester so may be in Lancs for the census.  So much of the 1841 for there is so decayed it will never be transcribed.

Looking at it (and updating this message!), I'm fairly sure these are the right people...everything seems to fit so I'll go on a hunt for marriages/baptisms etc and hope I can slot the pieces together

Thanks so much for your help, I'll let you know how I get on!

Lu: I can tell you that William Turner and Ellen Wilson were married in Wilmslow/Bollin Fee on 19 Apr 1808.  I have also have a photo of William Turner's family vault, which may be of interest to you.  The inscription on the vault is attached below.

Inscription: "Within this vault rest the remains of William Turner of Wilmslow Saddler who died Sept 28th 1865. Aged 82 years. Also, Ellen his wife who died Sept 29th 1863. Aged 75 years. Also James their son, who died Oct 16th 1866. Aged 51 years. Also James Blythen, who died Feb 22nd 1876. Aged 45 years. Also Ellen, his wife died March 14th 1877. Aged 57 years.
