BROTHERS family in Nottingham early 1800s
« on: Sunday 23 October 05 13:30 BST (UK) »

Hi

My father's family were supposedly lace-makers from Nottingham, but most of them seem to have been upholsterers! :D

On LDS there is a marriage (extracted): Benjamin Brothers to Mary Kirkman, Cropwell Bishop, 7 Apr 1779.

There are also these children all born to Benjamin Brothers and Mary ?, and all baptised at St Mary's Nottingham:

Mary Ann Brothers, 4 Jan 1780
Harriot Brothers, 24 Mar 1781
Frances Brothers, 21 Jun 1786
Anna Maria Brothers, 27 Oct 1789
William Brothers, 6 Oct 1791
Benjamin Octavius Brothers, 16 Dec 1796 (my ggg-grandfather)
Robert Allen Brothers, 18 Mar 1799

Hodson's 1814 Directory has:
Mary Brothers, upholder (upholsterer?), Long Row

Pigot's 1830 Directory has:
Robert Brothers, Long Row, chemist/druggist
Benjamin Brothers, Long Row, upholsterer

In 1841 Benjamin jnr, living in High St Nottingham, an upholsterer, has married (another!) Mary, and is listed with four of their children. They then move to Salford, Manchester.

Is there a birth and/or death for Benjamin senior and his wife? Is there any way I can link all those Brothers children to them? Are there many other families named Brothers in Nottingham at that time, or can I be reasonably assured that these ones are mine? ( :-[ I'll stop asking questions now!)

With thanks
Koromo

Thanks for this, Sue.

Are there lots and lots of Brothers in Nottingham, or are they thinly scattered?

Regards

I believe you have Benjamin and family in the High Street.  There is a Robert aged 35yrs, a chemist and family in Basford, have you got his details.  Thats about all there is.

No, I don't have Robert's info - he's a brother of my Benjamin.

I really expected there to be more of them generally - it makes it a bit easier claiming them as part of my family.

Thanks a lot :)
