Edward Nye -Dover 1841 onwards

Edward was a Brewer when his son, Jabez, married in 1844, aged 23. The parish was Buckland.
Any sign of him in any census? He may have been born in 1800.

The story goes that one of the Nye families decided to call all their sons after Biblical characters beginning with J. After very many such sons, they were frantic when yet another boy came along, but they found this obscure name- Jabez- mentioned only once, I think. Thereafter, the first-born son in each family was named Jabez.
Thanks for the info. All biblical- name Nyes are probably related, especially in the Dover area at that time, although a lot of them moved to London later. There were a number of Metropolitan policemen in the family.

Found this in 1841 census HO107/484/10 cannot read street Saint Marys Dover Page 2 and 3

Elizabeth do 15
Jabez do 20 (looks like Ship m?)
Jeremiah do 15 Lab

all born this county.

Edward is not there sorry but the Jeremiah that Mary found was probably his son not his grandson.

Hi,

I am very interested in this thread as Edward( B1798), father of  Jesse, Joseph, Jabez, John and Elizabeth Nye are all related to me. May I ask if you have any more information on these Nyes's or are they a different family of Nye's from St Marys, Dover than mine?

Also interested to hear from HH about the theory of choosing religious names for their children.May I ask where that came from?

Hello Terry,
So good to hear from you! We share the same branch, you'll be pleased to hear. I haven't replied sooner because I'm away from home at the moment but will do so early next week. The Edward Nye trail is very confusing because there were father and son Edwards and second marriages etc, so it's difficult to work out which one's which. When I get back to my records, I'll pass on the info I have.
There was certainly a tradition of calling the first born son Jabez for a few generations, which eventually died out but I have a great cousin who has it as a second name. The Nye name descended from my grandfather will die out in a few years because there is no next generation to carry the name- all males either unmarried or childless.
I hope those nuggets will do for now.
