Lancashire Directory Look up Request
« on: Tuesday 24 August 04 09:11 BST (UK) »
If cotton spinners are shown in the Lancashire Directories, can I please request a look up for Joseph Travis born 1811/1812. Last known address on the 1851 census was Milking Green Lees Knotts Lane Ashton-under-Lyne.

How do Directories work?  Who is listed in them and how are the names listed?  Alphabetically by name or occupation?  I'm intersted in the name 'Laville' -occupation, Wire Drawer (wire worker)
What would I be looking for in a Directory and what other info would I need for a lookup apart from a name.
Curious!!!!

 ???

Hi Kate

Basically, a name is all you need

Directories usually list the Resident Nobility and Gentry, Professional Gentlemen and tradespeople, business premises, traders, and usually in alphabetical order.

Generally a history and topographical description of the district is given.

The advertisements are particularl interesting, giving a true flavour of the period.
