1861 Census surname Cobby
« on: Tuesday 24 August 04 11:28 BST (UK) »
Would someone mind looking up a John Cobby aged about 12 in the 1861 census. He may be around Birdham, Hurstpierpoint or Albourne. His father would be James and his mother would be Sarah. Many thanks

Hi Lobster bot

Sorry to be so negative, but at the moment I personally do not have access to the 1861 census for Sussex.

Perhaps there is someone on the rootschat that has it on cd or film and do this lookup for Kim

Thanks Chris - I have sent an email to L. As I'm still quite new to this amazing website I'm still finding my way around it I hadn't come across his Cobby questions before!

Thats Ok, glad we are able to help

'L' sent me loads of Cobby Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from the St Helen, Ore, Parish Registers - now included them into my web site.

hi,
The name Cobby just caught my eye.

A Jane Edmonds, in my family tree, married an Edward Cobby on 17 May 1847 in St Nicholas Brighton. He was a 20 year old painter. They went on to have a daughter, Mary Ann, christened 27 May 1849. Mary Ann seems to live with her maternal grandparents - she is there in 1851 and 1861.
We have never found out what happened to Edward Cobby, or to Jane for the next 22 years.
In 1871 Jane is married to a Frederick Slater, and she dies of smallpox the week after the census.
It's a long shot - but who knows, perhaps Edward is on your family tree and you can fill in the gaps! We have searched for ever and not found Edward's death.
