Census of Donegal.1841 and 1851 abstracts

The original Census records for County Donegal for 1841 and 1851 are not available. They were stored in the Public Records Office in Dublin and were destroyed by a fire during the Civil War in 1922. However, copies of some of the returns have survived, due to the passing of the Old Age Pension Act.

This Act was introduced in 1908, providing pensions for everyone aged 70 and above. However, as the compulsory registration of births was not introduced until 1864 many people were unable to prove their age. To verify the claimant's age, details were checked initially against the 1841 and 1851 cencii which were held in the Four Courts building in Dublin. This information was recorded, and fortunately survived the 1922 fire.

The information is NOT a formal census, although the abstracts are based on the 1841 and 1851 Census details. The records only cover the families of pension applicants, and were copied from the originals about 1908. The abstracts generally include:

  • names from the 1841 or 1851 Census (The 1851 Census abstracts only cover people not mentioned in 1841)
  • the relationship between the individuals
  • age (mainly children including those born between 1841 and 1851)
  • a cross reference to the 1851 Census, noting discrepancies in names and ages (1841 abstracts only)
  • the comments of the investigating Officer
  • maiden name of the wife (noted as "nee .....")
  • year of marriage
  • married name of the claimant
  • recent deaths and those between 1841 and 1851
  • the Barony, Parish and Townland in which the family lived
  • the pension claimant

The following records are the details of some of the claimants from County Donegal (of which only a few came from Moville). These records are held at the Public Records Office of Northern ireland (PRONI). Many more Donegal records are held in Dublin.
