This is an appeal for information about the early life and family of my Great Grandfather John Evans who according to the 1901 census was born in Llanbadarn Fawr Cardiganshire. This is the only direct information I have about his early life. By the end of 1891 he was living in London and married to Annie. By 1901 he was living in Trowbridge with his wife and six children. By 1915 he was in Bristol where he stayed for the rest of his life. My father said that members of family from Wales visited fairly regularly. His wedding certificate showed an S. J. Evans as a witness. His father was recorded as John, a carpenter, deceased. One of his sons, a railway driver, was killed in an accident in Oxfordshire in the 1930s. A detailed report of the funeral gave not only the chief mourners but the senders of wreaths – a Margaret and Sophia were listed “ from Wales .” From this information I was able to find a family to whom he seemed to belong and for whom dates and names appear to match. His father and mother may well have been John and Anne Evans both from LLanbadarn Fawr. His brothers and sisters may then have been William, Margaret, Elizabeth, Sarah Jane, David, Sophia and Llewellyn James. Sarah Jane may have been the witness and Margaret and Sophia the senders of the wreaths. Sophia appears to have become an assistant teacher (locally?) and William worked for the Cambrian Times around 1881.Most of the brothers appear to have moved away from the village although I cannot track David. Any relatives of mine would probably be descended from the sisters of my Great Grandfather. At the moment I cannot find a birth certificate or baptism record that fits his details.
