What do the <brackets> mean on the IGI?

Does anyone know what it denotes when a surname is in brackets on the IGI?

For instance:

ANN <COCKING> - 27 May 1799 Adlingfleet.

It's an extracted record from the source not a member submitted one.

I've been coming across a few of these in the last few days.

If I look at batch no. C073792 for Adlingfleet (on the Hugh Wallis site) which is baptisms 1720-1813 Ann doesn't appear.  She's on batch no. C135582 and all the surnames on this batch have these brackets around them.

I've always assumed that it meant that the surname of the child wasn't specified and the parents had different surnames, so the name in brackets is that of the father.

I may be wrong ( quite likely in fact!)

I'd always assumed something similar, but the children I've been finding baptised at Adlingfleet are born well into their parents marriage so that isn't the reason in this case.

I just find it odd that she's not included on the main batch of baptisms for this parish and that all the people on this additional batch have these brackets.

I always assumed that they meant that maybe the Surname wasn't clear/ illegible or badly spelt on the originals. But I could be wrong

Maybe that's it and I'm just trying to read too much into it.

I think I'll have to try to get a look at the original parish registers and see if they throw any light on the matter.

Angled brackets is a standard transciption method of showing the data within the brackets is estimated. In the case of a name it means the name has been assumed such as a child bearing the name of its parents.
Other data commonly found in brackets includes dates, christian names or places.

Thanks for the answer.  I have found various spellings of this surname (and in the main they don't seem to use the last letter 'g'), so maybe it's to do with that - they have assumed the correct spelling.
