1811 and then 1817 - Getting Baptised twice, was this normal?
« on: Tuesday 02 May 06 21:11 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
Another poser after one of my regular visits to the CCRO to do some look-ups for Rootschatters...
When looking for baptisms for the MOULE family in the parish of Whaddon, I came across a baptism for Catherine MOULE on 28-07-1811.  Her date of birth of 22-07-1811 was given, and her parents Robert and Mary, late COLE.
These exact details were given again (i.e. there is no question that we are talking about the same individual - she hadn't died and been "replaced" in the family by another daughter being born later and being given her forename) when there was a five-fold baptism on 07-08-1817 of Catherine and sisters and brother Rebecca, Sally, Fanny and Adams Cole, all born between 1812 and 1816.
Was it considered O.K. to be baptised again for a second time in the same church like this nearly 200 years ago, or had somebody's memory slipped up?
Keith

Maybe the child was ill when born and the first baptism was a "quicky" just in case something happened, then later they decided to do it properly in the church. (just a thought)

Perhaps the five year old was upset when all her brothers and sisters were being baptised and so they kept quiet and had her done again.

If she was half baptised (the quicky) this is sometimes noted against the original entry and it was usual that they had another ceremony to accept them into the church at which godparents etc. would be involved.  This second ceremony was often entered in the baptisms register.

I have known this in two ways

A child was baptised a few days apart in Churches of different denominations.
Perhaps the parents attended different churches

Secondly I had some children born and baptised in Worcester. The family moved to Birmingham, and surviving children were baptised again - these were both C of E

In my own ancestry, the first child was not baptized until the second one came along - then they were both baptized. A few years later another child came along and all three of them were baptized, two of them for the second time. At the same church and with the same vicar!
