Where is Osenby?
« on: Thursday 11 May 06 02:53 BST (UK) »

Someone i have is listed, on the 1861 census, as being born in Osenby, Lincs.

But i couldnt find it on google, or GENUKI. There's only 7 other ppl listed as being born in Osbenby, Lincs in the same census, and one other listed in Osenby P of Topeliffe, Yorkshire.

Hoping someone knows where Osenby is, or maybe if its a spelling error. The pseron i was after had Falkingham, listed as her birth on two previous census' too.

Hi there, Grin

I'd say the birth places are "Oasby" and "Folkingham" in Lincolnshire.

They are both near the town Sleaford.

Hi,
Your place would be more likely Osbournby that is just a few miles North of Folkingham both on the A15 South of Sleaford. Map Ref is TF 0733

You need a local for this one. I suspect that the real spelling is not as it is pronounced. For example neither Folkingham nor Aslakby are pronounced as you might think from their spelling. I too would have Osbournby as my best bet, but I don't know that's right. Presumably the enumerator didn't know that pronounciation and spelling don't always agree.

I'm now inclined to think it's a dialect form of Osbournby too, as the road from Bourne to Dyke does eventually reach Osbournby.

Robin ... I know about Folkingham, but how should I pronounce Aslackby? Wink

I'd definitely say it was Osbournby too as Osenby is how it is pronounced.  It'd be easy to spell it that way by mistake.  (and its next village on from Folkingham)

The pronunciation of Folkingham depends on wether you are in polite company as locals will say fu........ham

There is a reference in the Shire County Guide book 'Lincolnshire and South Humberside' by David Kaye which states Osbournby is pronounced as 'Ozemby'.

Folks:

Osbournby is pronounced Osenby,
Aslackby is pronounced Aislaby,
and for good measure
Aswarby is pronounced Asaby.
As for Folkingham, which used to be spelt Falkingham, it's usually pronounced Fockingham.
I live in South Lincolnshire, and it's a minefield for the unwary!

David.

PS:  Stroxton is pronounced Strawson, and Croxton is pronounced Crowston

Hi, I think we have a few spelling errors here, I think it is "Asenby" just next to "Topcliffe"
Next to junction 49 on the A1(M) in Yorkshire.
