« on: Thursday 25 May 06 19:56 BST (UK) »
Hi There :D

Just found my GGG Grandad's marriage certificate from 1842, on it it states that his Father John Wilde was a Pilot   ::) - they were in Liverpool - Is something to do with the ships or docks?  Can anyone tell me?  I dont think there were jumbo Jets in those days ;D

Hi Jan,

That would be a harbour or river pilot.

The captain would/could bring his ship a certain distance up-river or near a docks, but then a (river) pilot would take command, on the grounds that he would have local knowledge of the river and /or docks.
