better than the one which the genealogist charges 10 credits for. The tab at the top for frequency and ethnicity make interesting reading too

I'm intrigued that there's no SMITHS in Wales or in the southwest of England.
Was there another name used for blacksmiths in the Celtic areas of the country?

Monica,
If I've understood it correctly, the white areas don't mean there are no records, but fewest.
So there will still be Smiths in these areas, but just not so many as elsewhere...?

Sorry, Leofric, expressed myself badly. Should have said 'not many' rather than 'no Smiths'.
Still, surely Wales and the south-west had plenty of blacksmiths. I'm just curious to know if they might have been known by another name. Or maybe the Welsh naming system of taking your father's name took priority over trade names?

Check out this site that has just been launched. www.spatial-literacy.org By inputting a surname you can see where your ancestors were concentrated in Britain in 1881. You can compare that with 1998 to see if your ancestors had moved to other parts of the country. It would appear that most people remain by and large where they were in 1881. You can also find the numbers of that surname in 1881 and the numbers in 1998. It also details whether any of those names spread to other parts of the world and again in what concentrations. I found that my family is 98% English in 1881 and roughly the same in 1998.
you might have to experiment with the site as it is experiencing problems due to the large numbers visiting. Tomkin

Thanks for that, Tomkin! A most interesting site.
Wish they had a key to the counties at the side, for "foreigners" like me! But at least I can see what area of the country they were in.

Been looking at the site and I am sceptical about the acuracy of the information.
As an example my surname is shown as only being in Sussex in 1881. My 2 x Great Grandfather died in Folkestone, Kent in 1891, having moved his family in 1860. On the 1881 Census there we 9.
My name was spelt correctly on the 1881,so hard to understand how they have not included it.
