I've found an 1841 Census entry for my Great Grandfather Evan Rees & his parents & siblings, (RG HO107 Piece 1419 Folio 2\7 Page 6).

However, for Address it says: 'Morriston Pb and Mb, Llangafelach, Classe, Higher & Lower'.

Can anyone enlighten me please as to what Morriston 'pb & mb' were?

Could it be Parliamentary Borough and Municipal Borough ?

found them - it's book 2 folio 7. Think it says PB and mts/mrs? No clue in the enumerator's view. The parliamentary borough was Swansea.
Sorry, can't work out what it means.

Apologies for confusion about folios & pages.

I did a spot of googling for Morriston Pb & Mb, & found a page on the 'Jeremiah' Family History, - some of whom were also living there for the 1841 Census, - but no clues as to what it stands for:-(

Any more ideas welcomed!!

Could it be something to do with the copperworks? Most of the men seem to be employed there - company housing?
Other than that, I can think of an MB in the area Mynyddbach(not far from Clase), but not PB.
Clutching at straws here.

Hi Romilly !

And thanks to all for getting us this far! it has to do with the address the PB MB bit.

The enumerators description describes the area as being - and this is a first look stab at it -

"From the Crown along the road to Crofase and that road as far as Pentreporth atlong that road as far as old Clyndes and along that road on the east as far as Clysidse Colliery and to continue on the East of the road from thence to the Crown"

I admit I can't see a connection with

I wrote to the West Glamorgan Archives about this...& got this reply from them. (Looks like you were right jksdelver:-)

Romilly.

Morriston was one of those places which could be described in a number of
different ways. It was in the ancient parish of Llangyfelach, and in Clase,
which was one of the constituent townships of Llangyfelach parish. By the
time of the 1841 census Swansea Borough had been enlarged to take in part of
Llangyfelach parish, and so by then it was also part of the Municipal
Borough ('MB') of Swansea. At the same time they also enlarged the
Parliamentary boundaries of Swansea, creating new constituencies. Morriston
thus became part of the Parliamentary Borough ('PB') of Swansea. There were
however other parts of Clase that were nearby but were not within the
municipal and parliamentary boundaries of Swansea, and it seems that the
census enumerator was more concerned with expressing this than giving a
specific road address.
