Monthly Nurse
« on: Sunday 08 July 07 15:36 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know exactly why someone's occupation would be described as a monthly nurse on a census return rather than just nurse?  Is it a technical term? I am baffled.
Thanks, Bluesky

Monthly Nurse An attending woman during the first month after childbirth. Also known as 'Confinement Nurse'. May also have the initials S.M.S. (Subsidiary Medical Services. i.e. not a doctor, but trained in some way)

Nurse who looked after mother and newborn baby at home, sometimes called a Baby Nurse.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Bob,

You beat me to it!

I was just in the process of posting the following  :) :
This is what might be called an FAQ.  Indeed, a very Frequently Asked Question.

Which, no doubt, is why Berlin-Bob has included it in his LEXICON of Genealogical Terms and Abbreviations - an excellent resource which can be found at:

Hi goldy,

With respect, I've never come across such a usage (at any date).

The site you quote is great fun and has some great cartoons.
But not, I fear, to be relied upon in this instance   ;D
