'Of this parish' on marriage entry - a question
« on: Wednesday 12 September 07 19:42 BST (UK) »
If it says 'of this parish' on a pre-1837 marriage entry does that give any indication as to how long the bride or groom had lived there? I mean can you only say 'of this parish' if you had lived there for a certain length of time or if you were born there? Or is it really just where they were living at the time of the marriage?

thanks
Sharon

For a marriage by banns, residency needs only to be long enough for banns (announcements of the couple's intention to marry) to be called in the church on three successive Sundays.

If the couple lived in different parishes, banns would have to be called in both parish churches.  As this required a fee,  often one of the couple (usually the groom) would go and live in the other's parish to save paying for two lots of banns.  This would mean that both parties were "of this parish" in the register.

The parish that you are "of" is always where you are living at the time of marriage, and is no indication of where you were born.

Sharon

was your groom a Vinton?

if not then what was your grooms name maybe we could find him in early census' to see if he was in Cornwall, actually what does it say on the census after he married? its only the 1841 that doesnt give place of birth.
Holman & Vinton- Cornwall, Wojciechowskyj & Hussak- Bukowiec & Zahutyn, Bentley & Richards- Leicester, Taylor-Kent/Sussex  Punnett-Sussex,  Bear/e- Monkleigh Gazey-Warwicks
