Hi Annie

Hope this helps in some way

A public grave (or common grave) is where the right to burial cannot be purchased and the grave remains in the total control of the Council. The Council decides who is to be buried in the grave and this might not be members of the same family. No memorial rights exist on public graves and so no headstone or other memorial can be erected. This form of burial requires only the payment of the interment fee, saving the cost of making the grave private. A private grave is where the Exclusive Right of Burial can be purchased for a period of 100 years or 50 years (25 years for the Cremated Remains Garden). The owner of the Right of Burial can decide who will be buried in the grave and memorials are permitted

Dear Annie,

I realize that your query and answer relate to Lancashire - from whence one set of my many-times-grandparents originated (Liverpool).

But just to add a comment.  I know that people here in Victoria, Australia, have recently added plaques on graves in local cemeteries to commemorate ancestors buried in public graves in the past (19th and 20th centuries).  And this despite the fact the one or more unrelated persons are also buried in the same grave.

Hi Jap !

Now that's a good idea ! ......

though I can imagine it would be a headache - if all the people in the grave were all commemorated at the same time ..... you'd have all these little plaques about !!

Shame they couldn't institute a main memorial stone for everybody in that grave ... then the families could add to it if they wanted !!

But of course that costs money ............. !! and where are the cemeteries etc ...... going to come up with the money ??  :P :P

I for one ... would be delighted to commemorate my family when I find them !!

Hi Annie

My wifes mother was buried in a public grave as she left no money to be buried with. We did pay towards her burial later, but as it was still classed as a public grave, we couldnt put a head stone on it of any sort of monument , unless we could trace the families of the other people that were buried in the grave. All we could do was stop the grave from being used again, buy purchasing it.
