role of bondsmen in marriages ?
« on: Monday 08 October 07 09:12 BST (UK) »
I always thought bondsmen were involved if a bride or groom were "quite young", but i have just found a marriage  where both are over 25.
could someone please explain their role please.

There were four documents associated with marriage by licence; the allegation (application); the entry in the bishop's book; the bond (agreement); and the licence itself.
As a precaution against the allegation being untrue the groom was required to stand surety, or was bonded, in a fairly large sum of money, jointly with his colleague or relation.

The 18th. July 1823 Act still required allegations, but specifically stated that bonds were no longer necessary before granting a licence; in a number of courts, however. bonds continued to be filed with the allegations

thanks stan
this was a marriage in 1771, so can i take it that william barker [ the bondsman] might well be the father of thomas barker [the groom].
once again thanks

No, in many cases only the groom was a real person and the other bondsman a fictitious name.
