Meaning of "independent" in 1841
« on: Tuesday 08 January 08 21:31 GMT (UK) »
Hello all

On the 1841 census for London if you are listed as "independent" what exactly does that mean?

I have found a will on UK archives that fits this lady's date of death and is also in the area where another family member  had a will....but.....to spend he money I really need convincing it is a worthwhile chance to take.

Being 'of independent means' would mean that the person did not have to work for a living.  They might be living off investments and/or rents from property.

Another possibility I've seen is being  old/infirm and unable to work and being supported by the children. Either way it means not having to work for a living.

For some more topics, See Independent and Census Abbreviations in the

RootsChat Lexicon / Topic Catalogue (click here)

Some 'independents' might be described as Annuitants (also in the Lexicon)
as this is possibily a reason why they are independent.
