The Others
« on: Wednesday 09 January 08 14:57 GMT (UK) »
Sorry, I didn't know how to phrase the title or whether it should come under the lighter side or not, being a little morbid.

Did anyone watch the film 'the Others' a few nights ago. It was a horror/thriller/ghost story.

In the film there were death pictures(photographs) Victorian in age. Portraits of deceased family members posed as if there were still alive. It gave me the creeps.
Was this something that was practiced and did it happen in the UK.

I think I would have nightmares if I came across a family box with those in side.

Yes, I'm sure it was a practice in Victorian times ... and as I can't think what to call it, I can't search for it on here, but I'm sure this has been covered before on RC.

Do you mean pictures of newly dead corpse taken to remember them? Have heard of this especially with small children that might not already been photographed so the parents can have a portait of the dead child. None in out house, thank goodness, but we do have a lot of slides taken the day my husband's grandmother died- the funeral procession, all the mourners, etc. although no one has been able to tell me why the slides were taken.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

This has come up before, but I can't find the thread (which had some very odd photos!)

Can anyone else?

I think the thread was removed because it got a bit off-topic or something.

Will have a look!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Edit: it seems to have gone.  maybe a cautionary tale not to make this thread controversial

I remember now, thanks to Arranroots. Some people posted images of the Victorian death pictures, and I understand some people objected, and the thread was removed (shame - they were fascinating and a picture says 1,000 words)

So chat away, but post no images.

I assume they took the pictures because the technology allowed them to and as photography became cheaper the lower classes were able to take them to. Oil paintings may have preceded photography.
Thank goodness we don't do that anymore. Somehow it makes the film even creepier to know photographs like this existed.

I'm sorry I brought it up now, although it was part of the Victorian age that I didn't know about.
